Custom Feature Walls
The short answer
A feature wall is a full-height millwork treatment on the principal wall of a main living space, designed as the room’s architectural focus. It differs from an accent wall in scale and integration: feature walls typically run floor to ceiling, incorporate lighting, and often absorb a television or fireplace into the composition. Most take three to six weeks and one of the biggest cost variables is whether services are integrated.
Feature wall or accent wall?
The terms get used interchangeably and the projects are genuinely different, so it is worth separating them.
A feature wall is architecture. It runs the full height of the room, it is usually the wall you see on entering, and it commonly integrates other elements — a fireplace, a television, shelving, concealed lighting. It is a designed composition and it is the room’s focal point by intent.
An accent wall is decoration on one wall of a secondary room — board and batten behind a bed, shiplap in a powder room, picture-frame moulding in a hallway. It is a smaller, lower-cost project and it is not trying to be the centre of the house.
Both are worth doing. They just belong to different budgets and different rooms, which is why we treat them as separate services rather than pretending they are the same job.
Feature wall treatments
- Fluted panelling
- Vertical half-round or square flutes across the wall face. Currently the most requested treatment in Calgary. Reads as contemporary, catches light along its length, and works in both painted and timber finishes.
- Slatted timber
- Spaced vertical slats over a dark backing, which creates depth and shadow. Also offers genuine acoustic benefit when installed over an absorptive backing — useful in the hard-surfaced open-plan rooms common in new Calgary homes.
- Full-height panelling
- Stile-and-rail panelling from floor to ceiling. More traditional in feel, and the right treatment in a study, library or formal dining room.
- Integrated media wall
- Millwork that absorbs a television, equipment storage and often a fireplace into a single composition, so the screen stops being the only thing in the room.
- Mixed material walls
- Millwork combined with stone, tile or plaster. The junctions between materials are where these succeed or fail, so they need to be detailed at drawing stage.
- Lit niches and reveals
- Recessed display niches with concealed LED, or shadow-gap reveals that separate planes. Small details that make a wall look considered rather than clad.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a feature wall and an accent wall?
- Scale and integration. A feature wall is full-height architectural millwork on a principal wall, usually incorporating lighting and often a television or fireplace. An accent wall is a decorative treatment on one wall of a secondary room — board and batten behind a bed, for example. Feature walls are substantially larger projects.
- Are slat walls just a trend?
- Slatted and fluted timber are having a strong moment, and it is fair to expect them to date to some degree, as all strongly-of-the-moment treatments do. Two things reduce that risk: keeping the material and colour restrained rather than novel, and remembering that millwork is removable — a slat wall can be taken off and the wall made good far more easily than, say, a tiled feature.
- Can a feature wall improve acoustics?
- A slatted wall over an acoustically absorptive backing genuinely reduces reflection and echo. This is a real and measurable benefit in the large open-plan rooms with hard flooring that are standard in newer Calgary homes. Solid panelling without an absorptive layer behind it does not provide the same effect.
- Can you build a feature wall on a concrete basement wall?
- Yes. The wall is furred out to create a flat plane and a service void, with attention to keeping millwork off the concrete and allowing for any moisture management the wall needs. We assess the existing wall condition first, because installing millwork directly against a damp foundation wall causes problems later.
- How long does a feature wall take?
- Typically three to six weeks from approved design, with two to five days on site. Walls incorporating a fireplace, stone, or significant electrical work take longer because of trade sequencing.
