An accent wall is a millwork treatment applied to a single wall in a secondary room — most often behind a bed, in a powder room, along a hallway or behind a desk. It is a deliberately contained project: usually one to two days on site, a modest material cost, and no services involved. It is the most accessible way to add architectural character to a room.

Accent walls are the project we most often recommend to people who want a noticeable change without a renovation. The reason is simple arithmetic: a single wall is a small quantity of material and a short installation, and it changes the entire character of the room it is in.
The rooms where accent walls work best are the ones that are otherwise plain — a bedroom with four blank walls, a powder room, a hallway that is just a corridor, a home office that needs to look composed on video calls. These are exactly the rooms that rarely justify a larger millwork budget.
The judgement call is which wall. It should be the wall you see first on entering, or the wall that anchors the room’s function — behind the bed, behind the desk, behind the vanity. Treating a wall that is mostly covered by furniture or interrupted by doors wastes the effect.

Accent wall treatments
- Board and batten
- Vertical battens with a cap rail, either to chair height or full height. The most versatile and most requested. Works in almost any room.
- Picture-frame moulding
- Applied rectangular frames with the painted wall as the panel field. The lowest-cost treatment and very effective in hallways, dining rooms and stairwells.
- Shiplap
- Horizontal boards with a consistent reveal between them. Reads as relaxed and coastal-adjacent; suits bedrooms, powder rooms and secondary spaces.
- Vertical slats
- Spaced slats on a painted backing. The contemporary option, and effective behind a bed or a desk.
- Grid / geometric
- Squares or a repeating geometric layout. More assertive; best in a room that can carry a strong pattern.
- Half-wall with a ledge
- A treatment stopping at around 1200mm with a shallow shelf on top. Practical in hallways and entries where the ledge gets used.

- How much does an accent wall cost?
- It is one of the most affordable millwork projects because it involves a single wall and no services. Cost depends on the treatment — picture-frame moulding is the least expensive, slats and full-height board and batten more — plus wall size and whether painting is included. Most accent walls are a one to two day installation.
- Which wall should I treat?
- The wall you see first entering the room, or the wall that anchors the room’s use — behind the bed, the desk or the vanity. Avoid walls largely covered by furniture, and avoid walls broken up by several doors and windows, since the treatment ends up fragmented.
- Is shiplap out of style?
- Horizontal shiplap has passed its peak and is fairly strongly associated with a particular period. Vertical shiplap, board and batten, and slats currently read as more current. That said, millwork is removable, and in a bedroom or powder room a treatment you like is a defensible choice regardless of trend.
- Can accent walls be installed over textured walls?
- Yes for battens and slats, which sit proud of the wall and only touch it at fixing points. Picture-frame moulding applied directly to a heavily textured wall shows the texture inside the frame, so those walls are usually skim-coated smooth first — which adds a step and a cost worth knowing about up front.
- Do you paint the accent wall too?
- We can install, fill, caulk and paint as a complete package, or install and hand over at a clean stage for your painter. Because filling and caulking are what make a millwork wall look seamless, we always complete those regardless of who applies the finish coat.
