The short answer
An entertainment wall is a built-in that solves three problems a television creates: where the equipment lives, where the cables run, and how a large black rectangle stops being the only thing you see. Done properly it includes a ventilated equipment bay, in-wall conduit for cabling, a mounting substrate rated for the television’s weight, and cabinetry proportioned so the screen reads as one element in a composition rather than the focal point of the room.
The three problems a television creates
Most media walls fail for the same reasons, and none of them are aesthetic.
The first is heat. Amplifiers, receivers and game consoles generate real heat, and a closed cabinet without airflow will cook them. Manufacturers publish clearance requirements that a shallow decorative cabinet cannot meet, and thermal shutdown or shortened equipment life is the predictable result.
The second is cabling. A modern setup runs power, HDMI, network and speaker cable, and those cables need to get from the equipment to the screen without being visible. Retrofitting that after the drywall is closed means either surface-mounted trunking or opening the wall again.
The third is proportion. A 75-inch television is roughly 1.7 metres wide. Mounted on a bare wall it is the room. Surrounded by cabinetry of the right scale, with the right amount of visual weight beneath and beside it, it recedes into a composition. This is the part that is genuinely hard, and it is decided at the drawing stage.
What a properly engineered media wall includes
- A ventilated equipment bay
- Passive venting through a rear or plinth opening at minimum, with a convection path from low to high. Where equipment load is heavy, a thermostatically controlled quiet fan. Doors, if fitted, are either vented or IR-transparent so remotes still work.
- Conduit, not just holes
- A smooth-walled conduit run between the equipment bay and the screen position lets cables be replaced later without opening anything. Standards change; conduit is how you avoid rebuilding the wall when they do.
- A rated mounting substrate
- A large television on an articulating arm exerts substantial leverage. Backing must be structural — blocking between studs or a plywood substrate — sized for the specific mount and screen, not fastened optimistically into drywall anchors.
- Power in the right places
- A receptacle behind the screen and a switched circuit in the equipment bay, installed by a licensed electrician. Running an extension lead inside a wall cavity is both a fire risk and a code violation.
- Considered lighting
- Warm dimmable LED behind or above the screen reduces the contrast between a bright display and a dark wall, which measurably reduces eye strain in a dark room. Integrated shelf lighting does the same job for display niches.
- Storage that suits the household
- Closed cabinetry below for the things you do not want on display, open shelving above for the things you do. The ratio is a household decision, and most people underestimate how much they want hidden.
Screen height: the mistake almost everyone makes
Televisions are routinely mounted too high, usually because they are centred above a fireplace. The comfortable viewing position puts the centre of the screen near seated eye level, which for most people is 1000–1150mm from the floor.

These are comfort guidelines for a seated viewer at typical living-room distance, not manufacturer specifications. Sofa height and viewing distance shift them. If a fireplace forces the screen higher, a tilting or pull-down mount recovers much of the comfort.

Television above a fireplace: the honest answer
This is the single most common request and the one that needs the most candour. It can be done well, and it is frequently done badly.
The two real constraints are heat and height. Heat is manageable: a properly detailed mantel shelf or a projecting hood deflects the rising plume away from the screen, and the manufacturer’s stated clearance above the appliance is a hard number, not a suggestion. Any competent installation respects it, and for a gas appliance the installation must comply with the manufacturer’s listing and Alberta gas code requirements.
Height is the harder problem, because a firebox plus a mantel usually puts the screen well above comfortable viewing level. If the room is genuinely a media room, the better answer is to separate the two — screen on an adjacent wall, fireplace as its own feature. If the room is primarily a living room where the television is used occasionally, the compromise is reasonable, and a tilting or pull-down mount helps considerably.
We will design either. What we will not do is quietly build a configuration we know will be uncomfortable to watch without telling you first.
Sequencing: why the order matters
Media walls involve more trades than most carpentry. Getting the sequence wrong is the main cause of cost overruns.
- Design and equipment list firstThe cabinetry cannot be drawn until we know the screen size, the equipment, and whether a fireplace is involved. Every dimension follows from that list.
- Rough-in before drywall, wherever possibleElectrical, conduit, blocking and any low-voltage runs go in while the wall is open. On a renovation this means coordinating with the drywall stage; on new construction it means being involved before boarding.
- Fireplace installation and inspectionWhere a gas appliance is part of the project, it is installed and inspected by the appropriate licensed trade before surrounding millwork is fitted. Framing clearances are set by the appliance listing.
- Cabinetry installationCarcasses, face frames and panels installed, levelled and scribed.
- FinishingFill, caulk, sand and finish coats — the stage that turns separate components into one continuous object.
- Screen mounting and commissioningMount fitted to structural backing, cables pulled through conduit, equipment installed, doors and lighting adjusted.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you hide all the cables in an entertainment wall?
- Yes, when there is wall cavity to work with. Cables run inside conduit between the equipment bay and the screen position, and power is provided by a licensed electrician at both ends. On a solid masonry or concrete wall — common in some Calgary basements — a furred-out service void or a shallow chase built into the millwork achieves the same result.
- Is it safe to mount a television above a gas fireplace?
- It can be, provided the appliance manufacturer’s stated clearances are respected and heat is deflected away from the screen by a mantel or hood. Those clearances are set by the appliance listing and are not negotiable. The bigger practical issue is usually viewing height rather than heat — see the height guidance above. We assess both before designing.
- How much does a custom entertainment wall cost?
- The range is wide because the scope varies enormously — a simple floating console and a floor-to-ceiling media wall with integrated fireplace, lighting and stone are different projects. The main cost drivers are overall size, the number of doors and drawers, whether a fireplace is included, the finish, and how much electrical work is required. We provide a fixed written quote after measuring.
- Do I need an electrician?
- For any new receptacle, new circuit or altered wiring, yes — that work must be done by a licensed electrician and permitted where required. We coordinate this as part of the project. Simply relocating a television on an existing receptacle does not require electrical work.
- How long does an entertainment wall take?
- Typically three to six weeks from approved design. Projects involving a new fireplace, stone, or significant electrical work run longer because of trade sequencing and inspection stages. On-site time is usually two to four days.
- Can you build around an existing fireplace?
- Yes, and it is one of the most common versions of this project. We measure the existing appliance and its required clearances, then design cabinetry that respects them while visually integrating the fireplace into the wall. Where the existing surround is dated, replacing just the surround and mantel is often a high-impact, comparatively modest change.
- Will the equipment overheat behind closed doors?
- Not if the bay is designed for it. That means a convection path with low intake and high exhaust, adequate free area, and — where equipment load is high — a quiet thermostatic fan. Doors are vented or IR-transparent so remote controls still work. Equipment overheating is a design failure, not an inevitability.
