Custom Carpentry in Northwest Calgary
The short answer
Northwest Calgary spans three very different housing eras: the mature 1960s and 1970s communities around Varsity, Brentwood and Dalhousie; the 1980s and 1990s family neighbourhoods of Edgemont, Hawkwood and Ranchlands; and the newer ridge communities of Tuscany, Royal Oak, Sherwood, Sage Hill and Evanston. Add the character homes and rapid infill of Bowness and Montgomery, and the northwest presents a wider range of carpentry conditions than any other quadrant.
Three northwests, three different jobs
The mature northwest — Varsity, Brentwood, Dalhousie, Charleswood, Collingwood — was built largely in the 1960s and 1970s, close to the University of Calgary and Market Mall. These are bungalows and split-levels with 8ft ceilings, original fir or early oak trim, and decades of settlement. Openings are out of square, floors are not level, and any new work has to be scribed rather than simply fitted. Trim matching and kitchen carpentry are the most common requests.
The middle-ring northwest — Edgemont, Hawkwood, Ranchlands, Scenic Acres, Silver Springs, Arbour Lake, Citadel, Hamptons — is 1980s and 1990s family housing. Larger footprints, frequently vaulted entries, and oak as the defining material. Stair railing replacement, trim upgrades and basement development dominate here, and the visual return on replacing 1980s oak spindles with modern metal balusters is substantial.
The ridge communities — Tuscany, Royal Oak, Rocky Ridge, Sherwood, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, Evanston, Kincora, Panorama Hills — are post-2000, with 9ft main floors and open plans. The work here is additive: media walls, mudrooms sized for a Calgary winter, closet systems, and basement build-outs in homes where the basement was left undeveloped by the builder.
Bowness and Montgomery are their own case. Original 1950s cottages and wartime houses sit alongside new infills along the Bow River, and the carpentry ranges from sensitive heritage trim matching to full-height contemporary millwork in a brand-new build.

- The single most requested project in the 1980s and 1990s northwest. Replacing oak spindles with metal balusters transforms an entry without touching anything else.
- Mudrooms and boot rooms
- Northwest communities sit at higher elevation and catch weather early. Garage-entry mudrooms with proper boot storage are consistently requested.
- Basement development carpentry

- Can you update the oak railings in my 1990s Edgemont or Hawkwood home?
- Yes — it is one of the most common projects we do in the northwest. Replacing oak spindles with metal balusters, and often the newel posts and handrail as well, can usually be done without replacing the treads. All railing work must meet current code for baluster spacing and handrail height regardless of the original configuration.
- Do you work on Bowness and Montgomery character homes?
- Yes. Older Bowness and Montgomery houses often have original profiles worth preserving and extending rather than replacing. We take a physical sample of the existing trim and either source a close match or have a knife ground to reproduce it.
- Can you finish a basement in a Tuscany or Evanston home?
- We deliver the carpentry — framing, trim, built-ins, bars, media walls and storage — within a permitted basement development. Basement finishing requires a City of Calgary building permit, and for full developments involving multiple trades a general contractor typically holds the permit while we handle the millwork.
- How does travel to the far northwest affect scheduling?
- It affects scheduling more than price. Communities toward the northern edge — Evanston, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, Carrington — are further from most suppliers, which we account for when planning delivery and installation days. It does not change our willingness to take the work.
