Kitchen Renovation Cost Guide

Updated 3 min read

The short answer

A kitchen renovation in Calgary has seven cost categories: cabinetry (35–45%), labour (25–35%), countertops (10–15%), appliances (10–15%), flooring (5–8%), lighting and electrical (3–5%), and plumbing (3–5%). The cabinetry specification is the single largest variable — it can represent anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000+ depending on the construction method, material and finish. Understanding each category lets you allocate budget where it matters most.

How to allocate budget by priority

Cabinetry — the foundation
The cabinets determine the kitchen's lifespan, functionality and visual impact. This is where quality matters most and where cutting corners is most visible in five years. If the budget is tight, reduce the number of doors and drawer fronts rather than downgrading the carcass material or hardware specification.
Countertops — the surface you touch daily
Budget $3,000–$7,000 for a typical kitchen. Laminate ($1,500–$2,500) is the most affordable and surprisingly durable. Quartz ($3,500–$7,000) is the most popular mid-range choice. Natural stone ($4,000–$8,000) is premium but requires sealing. The templating-to-installation delay is 1–3 weeks regardless of material.
Labour — the invisible cost
Labour is typically 25–35% of the total. It covers demolition, installation, tiling, electrical, plumbing and finishing. Cheap labour produces visible results: uneven gaps, misaligned doors, poor paint quality. Labour is the cost of craftsmanship. Do not negotiate labour rates — negotiate scope instead.
Appliances — buy before cabinets
Appliance dimensions determine cabinet dimensions for integrated panels, hood inserts and drawer widths. Choose appliances first, then design cabinets around them. Budget $3,000–$12,000 depending on quality level. The appliance purchase should happen 4–8 weeks before cabinet fabrication begins.
The contingency
Reserve 10–15% of the total budget for surprises: hidden water damage, subfloor repair, outdated wiring, or structural discovery. Every kitchen renovation in an existing home carries risk. A project without a contingency is a project that goes over budget.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cost of a kitchen renovation in Calgary?
For a full kitchen renovation with new cabinetry, countertops, flooring, lighting and appliances, the average in Calgary is $45,000–$65,000. Simpler refreshes (new doors, hardware, paint) come in at $12,000–$22,000. Custom projects with layout changes can exceed $80,000.
How do I compare kitchen renovation quotes fairly?
Compare the specifications, not just the prices. Ask each contractor: what is the cabinet material and thickness? What are the drawer boxes? What slides and hinges are specified? Is the finish shop-sprayed or on-site? Two quotes at the same price may specify very different products. The quote that details its specifications is the one that can be reliably compared.
Where should I splurge and where should I save?
Spend on: cabinet carcasses and hardware (they determine longevity), countertop material (you touch it daily), and lighting (it transforms the space). Save on: door style (simpler is often better), backsplash (tile is affordable), and decorative hardware (easily replaced later).
