Preventing and Fixing Squeaky Floors and Stairs

The short answer

Squeaks are caused by friction — two pieces of wood rubbing against each other, or a nail rubbing against a board. The fix is to stop the movement, either by re-fastening the loose member or by introducing a friction-reducing layer. A squeak that occurs in one spot has one cause and one fix. A squeak that occurs across a wide area indicates a systemic issue that needs a different approach.

The three causes and their fixes

Loose subfloor rubbing against joist
The subfloor has separated from the joist and moves when stepped on, creating friction at the nail shank. Fix: drive 75mm structural screws through the subfloor into the joist at the squeak location. The screw re-establishes the connection and eliminates the movement. Pre-drill near joist edges to avoid splitting.
Joist rubbing against header or blocking
Two structural members are rubbing against each other as the floor deflects. Fix: drive a shim (cedar or composite, never wood glue) between the members to stop the movement. Do not force a wedge that would lift the floor — the shim should fill the gap without adding height.
Stair tread rubbing against riser
A stair tread that has loosened from the riser moves when stepped on. Fix: drive screws through the tread into the stringer from above, or apply construction adhesive between the tread and riser from below. For open-stringer stairs, a screw through the stringer into the tread end is the strongest fix.

Prevention during new construction

Glue and screw subfloors
Apply construction adhesive to the joist tops before laying the subfloor, then screw (not nail) the subfloor to the joists. Glue eliminates the friction surface; screws prevent the subfloor from lifting. This is the standard for quality new construction.
Use screws instead of nails
Nails pull out over time as wood moves. Screws hold. Every subfloor, stair tread and structural connection is stronger with screws than nails. The cost difference is negligible.
Allow for wood movement in stair treads
A stair tread that is glued AND screwed AND pinned cannot move — and will crack. Screw the tread to the stringers, but allow the tread to expand and contract across its width. Do not apply adhesive across the full tread bottom.
Acclimatise lumber
Let framing lumber and subfloor material acclimatise in the house for several days before installation. Installing wet lumber means it will shrink as it dries, pulling away from fasteners and creating gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Will screws really fix a squeaky floor permanently?
In most cases, yes. The screw re-establishes the connection between the subfloor and the joist, eliminating the friction that causes the squeak. If the squeak returns, it means the underlying cause (structural movement, settling, moisture) is ongoing and needs professional assessment.
Can I fix a squeaky stair from above?
If the stair has finished treads, you can drive screws through the tread into the stringer, then fill the screw holes with colour-matched wood filler. For carpeted stairs, lift the carpet at the squeak location, drive the screw, and re-lay the carpet. The screw head will be invisible under the carpet.
Do squeaky floors indicate structural problems?
Usually not. A squeak is a friction problem, not a structural one. However, if the squeak is accompanied by visible sagging, cracking drywall, or doors that no longer close, there may be a structural issue that needs professional evaluation. Isolated squeaks at one or two spots are almost always cosmetic.
