Calgary Building Codes for Carpentry

The short answer
Most finish carpentry (trim, built-ins, closet systems, accent walls) does not require a permit in Calgary. Stair and railing work, structural modifications, egress windows, and anything that changes the building envelope do. The Alberta Building Code (ABC) governs stair dimensions, railing heights, guard requirements and egress — and the City of Calgary enforces it.

When you need a permit in Calgary
- Structural modifications
- Removing or modifying a load-bearing wall, adding a header, changing a beam, or altering the floor or roof structure always requires a permit and engineering review.
- Stair geometry changes
- Building a new stair, changing the headroom, altering the floor opening for a stair, or changing the riser/tread dimensions requires a permit. Renovation finishes on an existing stair (new treads, railing) usually do not.
- Egress windows
- Installing or enlarging an egress window in a bedroom requires a permit. The excavation, well construction and window specification must comply with the ABC.
- Electrical and plumbing
- Any electrical work (new circuits, moving outlets, adding lighting) requires a permit and a licensed electrician. Plumbing changes (adding a bathroom, moving a drain) require a permit and a licensed plumber.
- Basement development
- Finishing a basement in Calgary requires a permit. This includes framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing and mechanical work. The City inspects at rough-in and final.
- Fireplace and gas work
- Installing, moving or modifying a gas fireplace or any gas appliance requires a permit and a licensed gas fitter.

- No, built-in shelving that does not involve electrical work, structural modification or changes to the building envelope does not require a permit in Calgary. If you are adding integrated lighting, the electrical portion requires a permit but the carpentry does not.
- How do I get a building permit in Calgary?
- Apply through the City of Calgary Planning Services. For most residential projects, this is a Building Permit application submitted online or in person. Plans and specifications are required. Fees are based on the project value. Processing time varies — typically 2–4 weeks for residential work.
- Can I do my own electrical work in Calgary?
- No. All electrical work in Calgary must be performed by a licensed electrician and permitted. This includes adding outlets, moving switches, installing lighting circuits, and any wiring behind new millwork. The only exception is minor repairs like replacing a light fixture on an existing circuit.
