Garage Storage Planning Guide

Updated 2 min read

The short answer

A garage is not an indoor room and it should not be built like one. Temperature swings from below −30°C to well above 30°C, and humidity swings with them. Standard MDF cabinetry fails quickly. Plywood carcasses, moisture-tolerant panel and finishes chosen for movement are the correct specification.

Material rules for an unheated garage

No standard MDF
It absorbs moisture, swells and does not recover. In a space that cycles through condensation every spring, it is the wrong material throughout — not just at floor level.
Plywood carcasses
Dimensionally stable enough for the temperature range and strong enough for tools and equipment.
Keep everything off the slab
Adjustable feet or a wall-hung system. Garage floors get wet from melting snow all winter.
Allow for movement in joinery
Tight-fitted drawers built at 20°C will bind at −20°C. Slightly more generous clearances are appropriate.
Durable, flexible finishes
A finish that cannot tolerate substrate movement will craze. This is not a place for a brittle high-gloss film.
Corrosion-resistant hardware
Road salt carried in on a vehicle attacks fixings and slides.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Can indoor cabinets be used in a garage?
They can be installed, and they will fail sooner than expected. Standard MDF cabinetry in an unheated Alberta garage swells at the edges, doors bind and release with the seasons, and finishes craze. The material specification genuinely needs to change.
Should garage storage be wall-hung or floor-standing?
Wall-hung where possible. It keeps everything clear of a floor that gets wet from melting snow all winter, and it makes sweeping and washing the floor straightforward. Heavy items and workbenches still want floor support.
Is a heated garage worth it for storage?
It transforms what is possible — a heated, insulated garage behaves closer to an indoor room and tolerates a much wider range of materials. Whether it is worth the cost depends on how you use the space. If you work out there regularly, most people say yes.
