The short answer
Every panel has an exposed edge somewhere, and how it is finished is one of the fastest ways to judge cabinetry quality. Thin iron-on banding peels; thick machine-applied banding does not; solid wood lipping can be profiled and sanded. On any surface people touch daily, the edge is where failure begins.

Where edges matter most
- Shelf fronts
- Touched constantly, and the first thing to look worn. A solid lipping also stiffens the shelf against sagging.
- Cabinet openings
- Where hands and objects pass through repeatedly. Poor banding here shows within a year.
- Drawer box tops
- Gripped every time the drawer is opened.
- Under wall cabinets
- Visible from below in a way people forget when specifying.
- Anywhere near water
- Failed edge banding lets moisture into the core, which is how a sink base cabinet dies.
- Island ends and returns
- Kicked, brushed past and bumped by stools all day.

Frequently asked questions
- Does edge banding always peel eventually?
- Thin iron-on tape does, particularly at corners and near heat or moisture. Machine-applied banding of proper thickness, and especially laser-applied banding with no visible glue line, is far more durable. Solid wood lipping does not peel at all because it is glued as a solid component.
- Is exposed plywood edge a quality problem?
- Only if the plywood has voids. A void-free panel such as Baltic birch produces a clean striped edge that many designers expose deliberately, sanded and sealed. On cheap plywood with internal gaps, an exposed edge looks exactly as poor as it is.
- Can damaged edge banding be repaired?
- Small lifted sections can sometimes be re-adhered, and a short run can be replaced by a competent finisher. Widespread failure across a kitchen usually means the specification was wrong, and replacing the affected components is more sensible than repeated repairs.
