Side-Mount vs Undermount Drawer Slides

Updated 2 min read

The short answer

Side-mount slides attach to the outside of the drawer box and the cabinet sides. Undermount slides are concealed beneath the drawer, attaching to the underside. Undermount is the standard in quality kitchen and bath cabinetry because it is invisible, provides full extension, and includes soft-close as standard. Side-mount is cheaper and easier to install, making it appropriate for utility and budget applications.

When to choose each

Undermount for kitchens
Kitchens are the primary application for undermount slides. The concealed mechanism, full extension and soft-close standard make them the clear choice for daily-use drawers.
Undermount for bathrooms
Bathroom vanities benefit from the same concealed, soft-close characteristics. The modest additional cost is justified by the daily-use frequency.
Side-mount for utility
Garage cabinets, workshop drawers, laundry room storage and utility spaces are appropriate for side-mount slides. The lower cost and simpler installation make sense for less visible applications.
Side-mount for very deep drawers
Extremely deep or wide drawers (pot drawers, pull-out pantry shelves) sometimes use heavy-duty side-mount slides because they are easier to install at scale and are rated for higher loads.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Which slides are stronger?
At equivalent price points, they are comparable. At the professional level, heavy-duty undermount slides (Blum Tandem plus, 100kg rating) exceed most side-mount options. For standard kitchen use, either provides adequate strength.
Can I mix slide types in one kitchen?
You can, but it is not recommended. Mixing slide types creates inconsistency in how drawers operate and look. Standardize on one type throughout a kitchen for the best experience.
Do undermount slides require a specific drawer construction?
Yes. The drawer box needs a flat bottom panel and specific mounting positions. Quality undermount slides come with installation jigs that simplify this, but the drawer construction must be designed for the slide system.
