Should You DIY Built-ins?

The short answer
Some carpentry is genuinely accessible to a competent DIYer and some is not, and the difference is not what most people expect. Painting and simple applied trim are very doable. Floating shelves and scribed built-ins look simple and are among the hardest things to get right, because the difficult part is invisible.

Where amateur work most often goes wrong
- Assuming walls are square
- They are not. Cutting to a measured dimension rather than scribing produces gaps that no amount of caulk hides convincingly.
- Under-specifying fixings
- Drywall anchors for anything carrying real weight. This is how floating shelves end up on the floor.
- Skipping the filling and caulking
- It takes as long as installation and it is what makes work look finished. Most DIY projects stop one stage too early.
- Mitring inside corners
- They open. Coping is the correct technique and it takes practice to learn.
- Not accounting for wood movement
- Gluing a panel solidly into a frame guarantees a crack by February in Calgary.
- Underestimating the time
- A weekend project is usually three weekends, and the room is unusable in between.

- Because the difficult part is invisible. The bracket must land in studs or blocking, and the holes in the shelf must be bored perfectly on axis or the shelf will not sit level and cannot be corrected afterwards. It looks like the simplest possible carpentry and it is not.
- Can I build the boxes and have someone install them?
- Some trades will, though many prefer not to warrant the fit of components they did not build. If you want to try this, agree it explicitly beforehand — including what happens if the components turn out not to be square.
- What is the best first carpentry project?
- Picture-frame moulding on a flat wall. The layout is the only demanding part, the cuts are simple mitres, mistakes are recoverable with filler and caulk, and the result is genuinely transformative. It also teaches you setting-out, which is the skill everything else depends on.
