Freeze-thaw cycles are harder on exterior woodwork than steady cold because water expands 9% when it freezes, splitting wood fibres and popping finishes. In Calgary, where chinooks cycle temperatures above and below freezing repeatedly through winter, exterior woodwork needs species that resist decay, finishes that flex, and details that shed water rather than trapping it.

The three failure points
- End grain absorption
- End grain absorbs water like a bundle of straws. In freeze-thaw, the absorbed water freezes, expands, and splits the fibres. Sealing end grain with multiple coats of finish is the single most important protection step.
- Horizontal surfaces
- Water sits on horizontal surfaces (rail caps, shelf tops, bench seats) longer than on vertical surfaces. These areas deteriorate first. Sloped surfaces shed water better than flat ones.
- Trapped moisture
- Where trim meets siding, where decking meets the house, where a post meets the concrete — any joint that traps moisture behind it creates a freeze-thaw damage point. Proper flashing and drainage gaps prevent this.

Finish specifications for exterior wood
- Film-forming finishes
- Exterior stain, paint and spar varnish form a protective film on the surface. They require maintenance (re-coating every 2–5 years) and will eventually peel. When they fail, they trap moisture underneath.
- Penetrating oil finishes
- Hardwax oil and tung oil penetrate the wood and do not form a surface film. They do not peel, they are easier to maintain, and they allow the wood to breathe. The trade-off is more frequent re-application (annually or every other year).
- The maintenance commitment
- Every exterior finish requires maintenance. The question is whether you prefer to re-coat annually (penetrating oil) or strip and re-finish every 3–5 years (film-forming). Neither is maintenance-free.

- Penetrating oil finishes: annually or every other year, depending on exposure. Film-forming finishes (stain, paint): every 2–5 years, or when the finish begins to crack or peel. South-facing and west-facing surfaces need more frequent maintenance due to UV exposure.
- Can I use interior wood outside?
- Not without significant modification. Interior species (maple, birch, MDF) are not durable outdoors and will deteriorate quickly. Interior finishes (polyurethane, lacquer) are not UV-resistant and will yellow, crack and peel. Always use exterior-rated species and exterior-rated finishes for outdoor applications.
- Is pressure-treated wood safe for a deck?
- Yes. Pressure-treated lumber is the standard structural material for decks in Canada. It resists rot and insect damage. For the visible surfaces, cedar or composite decking is more attractive, but the structural framing should be pressure-treated.
