Plywood vs MDF for Cabinetry

The short answer
Plywood and MDF are not competing materials — they serve different roles. Plywood is the structural standard: strong, light, screw-holding, and dimensionally stable. MDF is the finishing standard: dead flat, smooth, paintable, and unaffected by seasonal humidity. Most quality cabinets use both: plywood for the carcass, MDF for the doors and painted panels. The question is not which is better — it is where each belongs.

Where plywood wins
- Carcass construction
- The cabinet box needs to support weight, hold screws, and resist racking. Plywood's cross-laminated structure provides all three. A 18mm plywood carcass is lighter and stronger than an 18mm MDF carcass.
- Screw-holding
- Cabinet screws grip plywood's layered structure much better than MDF's uniform fibre. Hinges and slides mounted to plywood sides hold better over time, especially under repeated opening and closing.
- Shelf spans
- A plywood shelf sags less over a given span than an MDF shelf of the same thickness. For wide spans (over 600mm), plywood is the structural choice.
- Moisture environments
- In a bathroom vanity, a laundry room or any cabinet exposed to occasional moisture, plywood recovers better than MDF. MDF exposed to standing water swells and does not return to its original dimensions.

Where MDF wins
- Painted doors
- MDF takes paint without grain telegraphing through. The surface is dead flat, uniformly dense, and finishes to a smooth, even coat. A painted MDF door looks better than a painted plywood door every time.
- Moulded profiles
- Raised panels, routed details, and decorative profiles are cleaner in MDF because the material has no grain direction to tear or chip during routing. The result is crisper detail and a smoother finish.
- Dimensional stability
- MDF does not expand and contract with seasonal humidity the way plywood (or solid wood) does. Painted MDF components maintain tight, consistent gaps year-round — which is why painted trim and doors in Calgary are almost always MDF.
- Cost control
- MDF costs less per sheet than cabinet-grade plywood. For painted components where the structural demands are lower (doors, decorative panels), MDF delivers a better finish at a lower cost.

Frequently asked questions
- Are plywood cabinets worth the extra cost over MDF?
- For the carcass, yes. Plywood carcasses hold screws better, resist racking, and last longer under daily use. For doors, MDF is often the better specification because it finishes better and costs less. The professional standard is plywood carcass with MDF doors — you get the strength where it matters and the finish quality where it shows.
- Is MDF toxic?
- Uncut MDF is safe in a finished cabinet. Cutting MDF releases formaldehyde-containing dust, which is a respiratory irritant. In a finished, sealed cabinet, formaldehyde off-gassing is minimal and decreases over time. Look for CARB Phase 2 or E0-rated MDF, which have the lowest formaldehyde emissions.
- What about plywood quality?
- Not all plywood is equal. Cabinet-grade plywood (typically birch, maple or oak veneer over a multi-ply core) is different from construction plywood. Look for void-free core plies, smooth face veneer, and at least 7 plies in an 18mm sheet. The core quality matters more than the face veneer for cabinet construction.
