The short answer

Homes in Calgary’s lake communities share three carpentry problems: the best wall is glass so the television has nowhere sensible to go, the walkout lower level is far more valuable than a standard basement, and lake gear needs storage a normal mudroom cannot absorb.

The view wall problem

A room designed around a water view has its largest opening on the best wall. That leaves the television, the fireplace and the storage competing for what is left.

The instinct is to put the media wall opposite the window. It is the worst option: the screen then faces the brightest source in the room and daytime glare makes it close to unwatchable.

Better answers are a side wall with seating angled toward it, or accepting a smaller screen positioned where it works rather than where the wall is biggest. Occasionally the honest answer is that the room is a sitting room with a view, and the television belongs somewhere else entirely.

Walkout lower levels deserve better

They are not basements: Full-height windows and direct yard access make a walkout genuine living space. Specify the millwork to main-floor standard.
Bars and servery cabinetry: Walkouts are where entertaining happens in these homes. A wet bar needs plumbing and expands permit scope; a dry bar is straightforward.
Media rooms work well: Light control is easier than upstairs, and the ceiling height is usually adequate.
Storage still matters: Finishing a walkout removes the storage it used to provide. Design purpose-built storage back in.
Watch the grade side: The buried wall behaves like a normal basement wall. Confirm there are no moisture issues before installing millwork against it.
