Floating Shelf Installation Guide

The short answer
Floating shelves are held up by concealed mounting hardware: a steel rod-and-bracket system that is anchored into the wall and hidden inside the shelf. The load capacity depends on the wall type (drywall, concrete, or stud mounting), the bracket system, and the shelf material. A properly installed floating shelf in studs holds 30–50 kg. In drywall alone with toggle bolts, the limit is 10–15 kg.

Installation considerations
- Locate the studs
- A stud finder is essential. For heavy loads (books, stone objects, heavy ceramics), the shelf must be anchored into at least two studs. Drywall anchors are only suitable for lightweight decorative items. Stud mounting is non-negotiable for functional shelving.
- Shelf depth vs load
- A 200mm (8") deep shelf holds less than a 300mm (12") shelf of the same material because the load has a longer lever arm. Deeper shelves need stronger brackets. For book shelves, 250–300mm depth is standard. For display shelves, 150–200mm is common.
- Shelf material matters
- Solid hardwood is the strongest per weight. Plywood is strong and stable. MDF is heavy and weaker — a 300mm MDF shelf sags under its own weight over a 1200mm span. For long spans, plywood or solid wood is required. MDF is limited to short spans with close bracket spacing.
- Spacing between shelves
- Standard shelf spacing for books is 250–300mm (10–12"). For display shelves, 300–400mm. For mixed storage, variable spacing works best. Measure the tallest item you plan to store and add 50mm clearance. Adjustable shelving systems allow repositioning later.
- The sag factor
- Every shelf sags over time if the span is too long for the material and thickness. A 18mm plywood shelf spanning 1200mm with support only at the ends will sag within months. The fix: add a middle bracket, increase the material thickness, or reduce the span. Sagging is a structural failure, not a cosmetic issue.

- Can I install floating shelves in a concrete wall?
- Yes, but it requires different hardware. Concrete walls need chemical anchors or expansion bolts rather than wood screws. A hammer drill with a masonry bit is required to create the pilot holes. Chemical anchors provide the highest load capacity in concrete — typically 40–60 kg per bracket.
- What is the maximum span for a floating shelf?
- For 18mm plywood: 900mm maximum without centre support. For 25mm plywood or solid hardwood: 1200mm. For MDF: 600mm maximum (MDF sags under its own weight over longer spans). Adding a centre bracket doubles the effective span.
