The short answer

Replacing a fireplace surround while keeping the existing appliance is one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption changes available in a Calgary living room — typically one to three days on site, no permit, and no structural work. The two most common candidates are the 1990s oak-and-brass surround and the builder-grade tile face.

Six approaches, least to most involved

Paint the existing surround: The cheapest option. Works on solid wood surrounds that are structurally sound but dated in colour. Will not rescue a surround whose proportions are wrong.
Replace the mantel only: A new timber beam or a built-up painted mantel on the existing face. Fast, modest cost, and it changes the character of the whole assembly.
Re-face and re-mantel: New face material — tile, stone or plaster — plus a new mantel. The most common full makeover and the one with the best return on disruption.
Add flanking built-ins: Cabinetry either side turns a fireplace into a full wall composition and adds real storage. Note that chimney breasts are rarely centred, so cabinetry is usually built asymmetrically to look symmetrical.
Full-height treatment: Carrying millwork, tile or stone from hearth to ceiling. The most transformative option. If you go this route, take it all the way — stopping short of the ceiling on a fireplace wall looks unresolved.
Integrate a media wall: Absorbing a television into the composition so the screen reads as one element. Requires resolving viewing height honestly.
