The short answer
Entryways get neglected because they are circulation rather than a room, yet everyone passes through them several times a day. The three things that make one work are somewhere to sit, somewhere to put things down, and enough hook capacity for a Calgary winter.
What a working entry needs
- A bench at 430–460mm
- For putting boots on. Even 900mm of bench transforms a front entry.
- A drop zone
- A shallow surface or drawer for keys, mail and the things that otherwise migrate to the kitchen counter.
- Hooks, generously
- More than the number of people who live there, because guests arrive in winter coats too.
- Somewhere for boots to drain
- Even at a front door. A tray or an open shelf keeps meltwater off the floor.
- A mirror
- Genuinely useful on the way out, and it makes a narrow entry feel wider.
- Light at the right height
- Overhead light alone puts your face in shadow at the mirror.

The real constraint is usually leaving enough clearance for the front door to open comfortably, not the wall length.

Frequently asked questions
- What if my entry is too narrow for a bench?
- A wall-hung ledge at 430mm with boot storage below gives you most of the function in 250mm of depth. Hooks, a mirror and a small drop-zone shelf are worthwhile in almost any width.
- Should the front entry match the mudroom?
- They should be compatible but they do different jobs. A front entry is presentation plus light-duty storage; a mudroom is heavy-duty and built for wet gear. Using the same profiles and colours ties them together without pretending they are the same room.
- How many hooks do I need?
- More than you think. One per household member for everyday coats, plus two or three for guests, plus lower ones for children. Winter coats are bulky, so allow 150mm of width per hook rather than crowding them.
