Dealing with Wood Movement in Renovations

The short answer
Wood moves. It expands across the grain in humid conditions and contracts in dry conditions. In Calgary, where indoor humidity swings from 40% in summer to 15–25% in winter, wood movement is significant — a 200mm-wide board can move 3–5mm across its width in a single season. Every carpentry detail that does not accommodate this movement will eventually show a defect: a opened mitre, a cracked panel, a buckled shelf, a split board.

Design details that prevent movement damage
- Floating panels
- A panel that is free to move within a frame (grooved or rabbeted, not glued) accommodates seasonal expansion and contraction without cracking. This is the fundamental principle behind frame-and-panel construction — it has been used for centuries because it works.
- Coped inside corners
- A coped joint (one board shaped to follow the profile of the other) closes as wood shrinks. A mitred inside corner opens. On baseboard and crown moulding, coping inside corners is the single most important technique for a joint that stays tight year-round.
- Slotted screw holes
- In any connection where the wood needs to move (door hinges on wide panels, shelf pins near the edges, face-frame connections), elongate the screw holes in the direction of movement. A round hole restricts movement; a slotted hole allows it.
- Expansion gaps
- Wide solid-wood surfaces (tabletops, floating shelves, panel walls) need a gap at the edges to accommodate expansion. A rule of thumb: allow 3mm of gap per 100mm of board width. A panel that is glued tight to a frame on all four sides will crack or buckle.
- Balanced construction
- Finish all faces of a board equally. A shelf finished on its top face but not its bottom face will cup because the two faces exchange moisture at different rates. Seal every face, every edge, every time.

Calgary-specific considerations
- Chinook cycles
- Chinooks cause rapid temperature and humidity swings — a 20°C temperature change in hours. This cycles the wood repeatedly rather than letting it settle, which increases stress on joints and finish. Design for the worst case, not the average.
- Humidifier impact
- A whole-house humidifier that holds indoor humidity at 35% through winter dramatically reduces wood movement. This is the single most effective homeowner action for protecting millwork, hardwood floors and furniture.
- Material acclimatisation
- Let wood sit in the house for 3–5 days before cutting and installing it. This allows the wood to reach equilibrium with the indoor humidity. Installing wood that is still acclimating means the wood will move after installation, stressing joints and finish.
- MDF advantage
- MDF does not move seasonally the way solid wood does. This is why painted trim in Calgary is almost exclusively MDF — it maintains tight joints and consistent gaps year-round. Use MDF for painted components; use solid wood where grain appearance matters and accommodate the movement.

- The doors (if solid wood) shrink in winter dry air, creating larger gaps. But the frame may shift differently, or the house itself may settle as humidity changes. The most common cause is actually the door slab moving within the frame. Adjust the hinges to add clearance.
- Can you completely prevent wood movement?
- No. You can minimise it (by using MDF for painted components, maintaining humidity, and sealing all faces), but you cannot eliminate it in solid wood. The goal is to design and build details that accommodate movement rather than fight it.
