What moves the price
- Drawers
- Each drawer adds roughly $200–400 depending on size and slide quality. A closet with six drawers costs $1,200–2,400 more than one without. But drawers are where the real daily function lives — they are worth prioritising.
- Material
- Melamine on particleboard is the standard budget material. Plywood carcasses cost 30–50% more but last significantly longer. Solid hardwood or painted MDF with a furniture finish costs substantially more.
- Hardware
- Side-mount roller slides are cheapest. Undermount soft-close slides add $30–60 per drawer but transform the daily experience. Pull-out accessories (trouser racks, tie racks, jewellery trays) add $100–300 each.
- Lighting
- LED strip lighting under shelves and inside the closet costs $500–1,500 installed and makes the closet significantly more functional. It must be planned during construction, not added after.
- Island
- A centre island in a walk-in closet requires minimum 1200mm clearance on all sides and adds $2,000–5,000 depending on size, drawers and countertop material.

- Is a custom closet worth it compared to IKEA?
- It depends on the space. IKEA's PAX system works well in standard rectangular rooms with typical ceiling heights. Custom is worth it when the closet has unusual dimensions, a sloped ceiling, or when you want a furniture-grade finish. The cost difference is smaller than most people expect for a basic system.
- How long does a closet installation take?
- A basic walk-in system installs in one day. A mid-range system with drawers and lighting takes one to two days. A full custom dressing room with an island takes two to four days. Design and fabrication add two to four weeks before installation.
- Should I closet the whole bedroom wall?
- A full wardrobe wall (floor to ceiling, wall to wall) is the most efficient use of space and provides the most storage. But it commits the wall permanently and reduces the room's flexibility. If the room's function might change, consider a more contained closet system.
