Cabinet Care and Cleaning Guide

The short answer
Cabinet care comes down to two principles: clean gently and clean regularly. The finish on quality cabinets is durable but not indestructible. Harsh chemicals, abrasive pads and excessive moisture are the three enemies. A soft cloth with warm water and mild dish soap handles 90% of cabinet cleaning. The remaining 10% requires specific products for specific stains.

Daily habits that protect cabinets
- Wipe spills immediately
- Water, oil, acid (lemon juice, tomato sauce) and alcohol all damage cabinet finishes if left in contact. A 30-second wipe prevents a permanent mark. Keep a microfibre cloth near the sink and stove.
- Use cutting boards and trivets
- Never cut directly on a countertop edge that contacts a cabinet face. Never place hot pans on or near cabinet surfaces. The heat and impact damage is permanent.
- Avoid hanging towels on handles
- Wet towels draped over cabinet handles trap moisture against the finish. Over time, this softens the finish and causes discolouration. Use a dedicated towel bar or hook.
- Open drawers fully before loading
- Dragging items across a drawer front scratches the finish. Open the drawer, place the item inside, close gently. The few seconds saved by shoving items in are not worth the cumulative finish damage.
- Keep handles tight
- Loose handles wobble against the door face, wearing through the finish around the mounting holes. Tighten handle screws every few months. A tiny drop of threadlocker on the screws prevents loosening.

Specific stain solutions
- Grease and cooking oil
- Warm water with a few drops of dish soap, applied with a soft cloth. For stubborn grease, add a small amount of baking soda to the soapy water to create a mild abrasive paste. Wipe in the direction of the grain (on stained surfaces) or in one direction (on painted surfaces).
- Water marks
- White water marks on a clear finish are moisture trapped in the finish layer. Place a clean cotton cloth over the mark and press with a warm iron (low heat, no steam). The heat draws the moisture out. For dark water marks, the finish has been penetrated — touch-up or refinishing is needed.
- Fingerprints and smudges
- A slightly damp microfibre cloth is all that is needed. For matte finishes that show fingerprints more, use a dry cloth and wipe gently. Avoid over-wetting.
- Stickers and adhesive residue
- Apply a small amount of mineral spirits or adhesive remover to a cloth (not directly to the surface) and rub gently. Test on an inconspicuous area first — some finishes are affected by solvents.

- Murphy's Oil Soap is designed for sealed wood surfaces. On painted cabinets, it can leave a residue that builds up over time and affects the sheen. Use warm water with mild dish soap instead — it is gentler and does not leave a film.
- How do I clean inside cabinets?
- Empty the cabinet, vacuum loose debris, wipe shelves with warm soapy water, dry completely, then reload. Line shelves with shelf liner to simplify future cleaning. Do this twice per year for kitchen cabinets, annually for others.
