The capacity arithmetic
A typical freestanding wardrobe is around 2000mm tall and 1200mm wide. Against a 2440mm wall it leaves roughly 440mm of dead space above — which is where seasonal storage and luggage would go — plus whatever gap remains at each end.
A built-in across the same wall uses the full height and the full width. In a 3000mm bedroom wall, that is often close to double the storage volume of a freestanding unit that occupied the same visual position.
It also removes the gaps, which matters more than people expect. The 100mm gap beside a wardrobe and the dusty shelf on top are both places things accumulate and nothing useful happens.
